york at new year

S O L D O U T !
The ancient and beautiful walled city of
York has attracted
visitors for centuries. England’s
most ancient northern city lies on the River Ouse in the centre of
the Vale of York between the Dales and North York Moors.

Often described as a living museum, York’s Roman, Viking and
medieval legacies mark the story of its history throughout the
streets and buildings, from
the narrow lanes of the Shambles to the
majestic Minster, the
largest Gothic cathedral
north of the Alps.
things to do
Few cities are as pretty as
York in the festive
season and the heart of the city comes to
life with lights.
A wander through the streets of
York can reveal the
colourful and fascinating past of this beautiful city (some guided
tours are free). The
Jorvik
Viking
Museum is a
must, and
the Christmas open air winter ice rink will
tire out the most active of children.
For a taste of York’s
more gruesome secrets visit the dungeons or one of the many evening
ghost trails through the city,
for the less brave there’s the York
Castle
Museum
with a glimpse of daily life in Victorian York.
York
also
boasts the largest railway museum in the world (free
entrance),
home to the York “Eye”, a huge
big-wheel with views over the city and dales.
